The media has the power to shape perception. They should be required to be accurate and if they fail to report responsibly then they should be subject to appropriate consequences.

But reality is racist. For years the media did report crime accurately, but as it turns out blacks commit a disproportionate amount of crime. So, some dipstick somewhere decided that by pretending that this wasn't so, it would eventually come to be not so. That experiment has been going on for decades and nothing has changed.

Something about the newest movie in the Batman series has led legal authorities to expect a mass shooting at early showings of the movie. It's not so much the movie itself, but online banter about the movie. This might suppress interest in the movie in theaters, but it could have the reverse effect for home viewers.

The Joker
Mass shooting hysteria is not a good thing, but as long as mass shootings occur, people will be fearful of being caught up in one. The related issue of the mass shooter stereotype is a bigger problem. The fact pattern does not support the stereotype, but the corporate media has cherry picked a subset of incidents in order to create and maintain this false stereotype.

4 killed in Kansas City bar shooting
The amazing thing here is that the media (at least ABC news) actually reported that the shooter was Hispanic. Usually they don't even report on mass shootings unless a white guy does them and if they do feel the need to report on a mass shooting perpetrated by a guy who is not white, then usually they don't mention the race of the shooter. Is this a rare exception or is this a sign that the corporate media is starting to be more open and transparent about race?

Asian Boy Shoots Up School On Sixteenth Birthday
The kid was Asian and it's quite possible he didn't like books. So, the whole "white shooter" myth is once again proven wrong, but the connection to books remains an open book, so to speak.
Police believed the gunman fled from the school after the shooting and began a search for him, releasing a description calling him a 15- or 16-year-old Asian male wearing a black hat, a black shirt or sweatshirt and blue jeans. Saugus High School’s student body is made up of 7 percent Asian students.

recluse: The number of white shooters has never been disproportionate to the percentage of whites in the general population. It was racist to assert that mass shootings were a white thing and that entire false narrative set back the national dialogue on both race relations and on what to do about mass shootings. The media often endulges in counter-productive rhetoric because it gets an emotional response which gets them more attention which makes them money. It's ironic that those who try to hold the media accountable are the ones being accused of spreading fake news.

drdesert: I would stress that the number of white shooters has actually been low compared to the percentage of whites in the general population. It's just that the media has cherry-picked events so that a false perception has been established in the general population. Even more astounding is that so-called mass shootings account for a tiny percentage of murders in general and blacks commit murder at a ridiculously high rate compared to any other ethnic group. Even so, only a small percentage of blacks ever commit an actual murder, but the percentage is even lower for Hispanics, yet lower for whites and lowest of all for Asians. Facts are facts and the media should stick to the facts.

When has the news media ever stuck to the facts? They specialize in stirring up controversy, creating problems where no problems exist, and enabling special interest groups to undermine American values. That's their schtick!

Mr. Happy - Insane Clown Posse :dizzy:
Murder is a hobby for some people and racking up a world record body count would be a bonus. It would probably be better to stick to reading, but sometimes that's just not enough and if you can't have it all, maybe you can at least take others down with you. It might not be nice, but everyone needs a hobby!
