Afghanistan earthquake kills at least 1,000 people
It wasn't nearly as powerful as the quake that rocked Ridgecrest and Trona a couple years ago, but there was much more damage due to inferior building codes.

Could a Massive Quake Hit Palos Verdes, California?
It's all theoretical, but also inevitable sooner or later.

Turkey-Syria earthquake: Buildings crumble as deadly earthquakes hit
Twin quakes in Turkey and Syria registering 7.8 and 7.6 on the Richter scale. Still think building codes are a bad idea?

Not only were the Trona/Ridgecrest twin quakes much less intense (6.4 and 7.1), but better building codes combined with no high rise buildings resulted in much less damage. These quakes in Syria and Turkey have resulted in many deaths and incredible damage. The Trona/Ridgecrest quakes seem trivial in comparison, although obviously some people were majorly inconvenienced.
