Death Valley reaches 130 degrees, hottest temperature in U.S. in at least 107 years
Seem a little hot lately? It's not just your imagination!
On Sunday, the thermometer at Death Valley's Furnace Creek, located in the deserts of Southern California, soared to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, according to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center. If verified, it would be the hottest temperature recorded in the U.S. since 1913, and perhaps the hottest temperature ever reliably recorded in the world. The highest temperature ever recorded on Earth was also observed in Death Valley — 134 degrees Fahrenheit in 1913.

Global temperature record set in Death Valley, California
The old record of 134.1 F set on July 10, 1913 still stands, but anyway you slice it, 130 F is still hot! It's slightly odd that this one came half way through August. Usually heat records are set during July.

Unless we're talking the southern hemisphere in which case we'd be looking at January.

U.S. Navy jet crashes in Death Valley National Park
One person was successfully rescued with minor injuries. The crash happened on October 4th. Not much info other than this:
A press release says the Super Hornet went down in a remote area in the southern portion of the park at around 3:00 that afternoon. The Super Hornet was assigned to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron, which is based at Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) in China Lake.

Missing Long Beach man found dead in Death Valley National Park
The article says that he was found in a remote part of Death Valley, but then it says:
He was reported missing a short time later and park rangers found McCarry’s vehicle on Lake Hill Road in Panamint Valley, a remote section on the park, on May 31. For two days, teams searched for him from the ground and air, aided by a California Highway Patrol airplane and a U.S. Navy helicopter. On June 1, searchers found McCarry’s body about a quarter mile from his vehicle in Panamint Valley.

The way I see it that's just a little ways off the highway, not far from the Panamint Dunes. Not very remote at all. Sad they guy died. He was only 69 years old, but I guess we all gotta go sooner or later.

Deceased person found near Zabriskie Point in Death Valley
It took rangers a couple days to find the body after coming across the car. It's hard to say what the guy was thinking....
Park visitors found the body of David Kelleher (67), of Huntington Beach on June 14 in Death Valley National Park. Kelleher appears to have been walking from Zabriskie Point toward Furnace Creek after running out of gas. On the morning of June 8, a park ranger noticed that there was only one vehicle in Zabriskie Point parking lot. On the evening of June 11, the same park ranger saw only one vehicle in the parking lot and remembered it from three days earlier. A heat wave caused record temperatures, up to 123°F.

Death Valley flooding to close roads for another week
Roads are closed, but it's too hot to travel out that way anyways and so hopefully the roads will be repaired by the time things cool down a bit!
