Obituary: Edwin Gehres
This guy was the pastor at Trona Valley Christian Assembly of God. He died at the age of 79 due to COVID complications on December 10th. I never met him, but he sounds like quite an impressive guy. Read the article for a more complete list of his many accomplishments.
In April 1976, Ed started a new position in the Film Video Projects Branch at Naval Weapons Center, China Lake. Ed’s career at China Lake continued with him becoming a project engineer for weapons systems including Sidewinder, Walleye, Sea Sparrow, and Sparrow. He became head of the Metrology Branch before retiring in 1995.

Anyone who has more info, please feel free to fill in what is missing. The story I have heard is very sketchy. What I've heard is that more than a couple residences were "swatted" and that at least some of those raids had to do with a recent murder. A few sketchy stories suggested that some of the raids had to do with drugs. There were lots of names, but only one is substantiated as you can see from the document here:

It looks like the SWAT team wasn't taking any chances:

The speculation I heard was that the victim was lured up to Trona to buy a used car. The deal was supposed to be cash and so that seems to be the motive. This is what was written on Fakebook:
On Thursday, February 25, 2021, a 6:16 PM, a shooting was reported at a residence on the 83400 block of Argus Avenue in Trona. Law enforcement and emergency medical providers arrived on scene and found Clarence Jerry Leabres, a 56-year-old resident of Corona, had been shot. He was pronounced at the scene at 7:02 PM.

I also heard rumors about other people being arrested for unrelated matters. Why make special trips to Trona when you can just do a clean sweep all at once?

Indian Wells Valley Groundwater Authority to discuss Searles nonpayment Thursday
This is kind of a big deal since it could mean life or death for the chemical plant in Trona. The plant intentionally failed to pay the groundwater replenishment fee ($2,130 per acre-foot ) which was recently initiated. The plant is challenging this fee in court and has decided not to pay it until a decision has reached. The problem here is that the plant doesn't have the legal authority to do this and so water could be shut off until payment is received with the possibility of a refund pending the outcome of the trial.
The groundwater authority has made several proposals to Searles in an attempt to reduce or avoid their replenishment fee, but Searles has not yet agreed to negotiate, Lemieux said Tuesday.

Will the plant shut down or continue to operate? That is the question. Here's the chemical plant's side of the story.
In a misguided attempt to manage the region’s overdrafted groundwater basin, the Indian Wells Valley Groundwater Authority (Authority) is singling out Searles with a hefty new “Replenishment Fee,” choosing winners and losers in the Indian Wells Valley Basin. The arbitrary and exorbitant new fee will not only increase water costs by 7,000% — or approximately $6 million per year — but will push Searles to extinction after more than 140 years of operation and amidst one of our country’s worst economic recessions.

FACT CHECK: The groundwater replenishment fee is neither arbitrary nor exorbitant and the chemical plant is not being singled out. The fee is being applied across the board and is based on the actual projected expenses of the groundwater replenishment project. Something has to be done and the IWV Groundwater Authority has bent over backwards to accommodate the needs of the chemical plant.

Hmmm.... It seems like a bad idea to waste money rebuilding the high school considering this news. Chances are that Trona will shrink and the school will have to close down within a few years. I know people have been saying that for a long time, but it looks like the end of the road is near. Just bus kids to Ridgecrest! They'll get a better quality of education over there. Trona even now can't offer that many electives and so why not give students more options?

KissMyTail: Wasting money on rebuilding a facility which is not needed is never a good idea, especially when there are better options available. Someone needs to step in from the county or the state and just set things in order. If allowed to, locals will waste the money on rebuilding the high school. They don't see the bigger picture since they are far too eager to preserve the dysfunctional past.

No water shut-off for Searles yet, attorney makes stupid comparison, proving himself to be an idiot
The plant needs to pay its fair share of the cost of the groundwater replenishment fee. It may be expensive, but if they are being asked to pay it, then they should pay it. They can challenge the fee in court and get their money back later if a judge agrees with their complaints, but in the meantime they need to be grown up and responsible about things. Also reading into the article it sounds like the plant is holding the community hostage as a way of forcing IWVGA to supply them with water which they aren't paying for. If I were the judge in this case I would nail the chemical plant with massive fines to make it clear that they should have done the right thing up front instead of playing this stupid game of hiding behind Trona residents!

Didn't the plant just win some kind of battle over the royalties they pay to the school? The money they save there will pay for the increased water fees. They come out in good shape. Why do they think they can get away without paying for what they use?

BoraxBill: No one wants to pay more than they have to. When the price of gas goes up people drive less. Now that water rates are going way up people will start conserving more. The chemical plant is not above the law and needs to realize that times are changing and water is going to become more and more expensive in southern California. Some parts of the country have water to spare, but getting water from one place to another is expensive no matter how you do it. And then there's desalination and that's even more expensive!
