dilbert: More popups than a porn site? Yeah, you nailed it. There's got to be a less annoying way to make money! Any-whos, according to my calendar this Friday is the 13th and it's bound to be an unlucky day for one of the two teams or possibly both. Maybe they'll go into an overtime that'll last until the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Should high school atheletes get EKG test?
More kids die as a result of sudden heart problems than from head trauma. Who knew?

Looks like the season is over for the mighty Tornadoes. They lost last night to the Desert Christian Academy Conquerors by a score of 48-24.

The Sandman (official video)
Well, it's a bit melodramatic and the religiosity gets real old real fast, but the production is pretty good. The problem is that the video takes itself WAY too seriously.

More of the same. This one isn't quite so bad.

It would be interesting to know if this video was authorized by the administration of the school district. It certainly puts the district in a rather precarious legal position. All it would take is one competent lawyer to turn this into a $2 million settlement. The ACLU has quite a list of lawyers who could have lots of fun with a video like this.

The legal ramifications of this video are truly startling. IMHO, whoever authorized this video is a total and complete idiot. The cheap theatrics and melodrama are annoying to say the least, but it gets worse. Not only does the video put the school district in a bad legal position, but the video-maker then engages in some serious Trona-bashing at the end of this poorly conceived clip. From the last forty seconds of the clip:
Trona sits alone against a derelict desert landscape, not far from the infamous California Death Valley. The scorching heat and salinity of the ground make it impossible to grow grass, giving Trona High School the only official dirt football field in the entire U.S. Blah... blah... blah... BS and more BS...

While it is true that Trona has one of only two sanctioned high school football fields in the USA, the negativity about the desert is inexcusable. If you don't love the desert, then you don't love Trona.

The least that could have been done is the inclusion of a disclaimer specifying that the video was not in anyway sanctioned by or associated with the local school district. It would have been far better to include a disclaimer at the end in place of the insipid, worn out cliches that are included at the end of the video. I'm of the opinion that a lawsuit based on this video is unlikely, but it is certainly feasible. After all, it's more or less like an inescapable confession, but I doubt that any individuals will actually file any kind of legal claim against the people responsible for this video or the school district. As long as the district did not authorize this video, in my opinion the district has limited liability. However, my advice would be for the district to terminate any employees who were involved in the making of this video in order to show that it does not condone the practice of forcing students to participate in religious activities.

Coach Won’t Stop Leading Prayers Despite Punishment
This type of situation was clearly settled in 1992 by the Supreme Court. It's one of the reasons why there is no prayer at graduation.

Here are a couple cases which I found after a quick search. These would represent what might be characterized as the "tip of the iceberg" as they say:
School prayer lawsuit in Georgia settled outside of court
This one only cost the district $225k:
The American Humanist Association, an atheist advocacy group, sued the Hall County School District in Gainesville, Georgia, in December, according to The Atlanta-Journal Constitution. Representing three anonymous plaintiffs, AHA sought a permanent injunction prohibiting the staff and administration from leading or participating in prayers with students during school-sponsored activities.

Notable Lawsuit Over School Prayer in Michigan
The legal precedent governing these cases is clear.
The Supreme Court had ruled on similar issues in the past, pointing out that organized prayers violate the First Amendment and the separation of church and state. School Superintendent Robert Glass said the coach did not lead the prayers but was present during the exercise, Mount Airy News reported.
