tronagirl and BoraxBill: Facebook views are ridiculously inflated. In fact, Facebook views may be inflated by up to one hundred times that of YouTube. I checked the video on Facebook and the view count was 4.7 million. Divide that by one hundred and that's only 47 thousand. Far from viral if adjusted for real views instead of fake Facebook views. Facebook is often called Fakebook for a number of reasons and this is just one of them.

FAKEBOOK: Exactly. But neither Fakebook or the Burroughs Football team have anything to do with Trona football even if they are interesting topics. Maybe a separate thread should be created. Then again probably not much left to say about either topic.

Burroughs last Kern County school still playing for a CIF title game
Sorry Twister, but it looks like there is more to say on the topic. What was said previously about Fakebook is still true and the previous video wasn't truly viral, but the football team in Ridgecrest faces much greater competition than the team in Trona. Not to say anything negative about the team in Trona, but there is no comparison between the two programs.

mrgreen: Don't be hating on The Mighty Tornadoes! I get what you're saying, but this is not the place. The Tornadoes had a very successful season and have every right to be proud of what they accomplished.

CA Bill Would Ban Tackle Football Before High School
It took a couple decades for smoking to be banned from public places and now the same process is occurring with football. Eventually high school football will be banned, but only after the lawsuits come rolling in. Just like women are speaking out about decades old supposed sexual harassment, the same will happen with brain injuries which can be traced decades back to high school football. Money talks, reason walks.

How soon before the first home football game? I heard that there's a new coach. Not that coaches really make any difference, but coaches usually receive a lot of scrutiny during their first season.

tronagirl: Right you are. Coaches never lead the way to success. However, they can get in the way of success. The best coaches stay out of the way and allow a team to perform to its full potential. Successful coaches understand this basic concept, but rookie coaches often feel that they need to "take charge" and lead the way. Such rookies generally don't become veteran coaches!

CTE: Why this brain disease is more common than you think
How long before football is banned at the high school level? We hear about lawsuits against the Catholic Church all the time over alleged sexual misconduct. That seems like a trivial issue compared with this. Real brain damage is occurring as a result of high school football. There's no denying that fact. How high schools and CIF remain immune to lawsuits over activity that they promote is difficult to imagine. This isn't just a few rogue priests committing random sexual acts, this is systematic abuse of tens of thousands of kids under the age of eighteen.

Society is in a state of denial over this issue. Football fans have convinced themselves that the benefits outweigh the harms. Obviously they're wrong, but it might take some time for the majority to pull their heads out of the sand. While sexual relations with minors potentially causes some psychological stress, high impact sports result in highly probable brain trauma leading to all sorts of incredibly bad outcomes. The reality is that allowing youth to engage in high impact sports is a serious form of child abuse. The social perception is quite different. I choose to live in objective reality, not social delusion.

shadylady: No doubt that the writing is on the wall, but it's hard to say how all this will play out. Will individual coaches be sued? Will it be administrators? Will it be school districts? How soon will this start happening? Will people who played high school football before a certain date be ineligible to file lawsuits? What diagnoses will ex-players need to be eligible to win lawsuits? Will certain states be more receptive to these types of lawsuits than others? I'd count on California being very likely to pave the way for these types of lawsuits. Like I said, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
