Postby blackturtle.us » Fri Aug 15, 2014 4:38 pm

Regular Board Meeting: August 14, 2014

The board meeting was fairly well-attended with a number of staff and students present as well as a small number of community members.

1) Board Member Comments: A board member mentioned that the next Trona Care Clean Up event is scheduled for September 27.

2) Superintendent’s Report: Mr. Olney talked about a number of topics including: textbook adoptions, summer staff trainings (anger management, student assistance program, etc.), WASC accreditation, certificated evaluation process, Local Control Accountability Plan, etc. He also reported that there are 112 students enrolled at the high school. Last year the number was below 100 all year long.

3) Trona High School ASB Summer Leadership Camp: Joseph Wolfe (ASB Advisor / teacher) and several students presented a report about the summer leadership camp they attended in Big Bear. They talked about camp activities and how they benefited from the program.

4) Anti-Bullying and Student Support - Alan Tsubota and Ruth Soto talked about a number of programs that the district is using to help students and their families to deal with various social issues and difficulties. The programs have titles such as “Bullies and Victims,” Stepping Up To Bullying,” “You Can Choose,” “Breaking The Cycle,” “Life Skills,” "Anger Management,” “Loving Solutions,” etc. Also mentioned were anti-drug programs and sex education. The various programs will be used at the elementary and high school as deemed appropriate.

5) Public Comments: A teacher with fifty-nine and two-thirds college units (beyond bachelor’s degree) talked briefly about the structure of the credentialed pay scale and how although he is only one-third of a unit short of advancing to the next tier, he hasn’t been moved up the scale.

6) Board Self-Evaluation: I was not able to stay for this part of the meeting.

Next Regular Board Meeting: September 11
RESCHEDULED: SEPT 16

Sounds like a whole bunch of bogus programs designed to make some company a bunch of money. Nothing like manufactured social problems to provide opportunities to create bogus solutions for! They sell their crap by claiming that they're providing a solution for a problem, but it's really all about making money! The problem is that it's our money that is being wasted on these bogus products!

As long as the idiots in charge of spending educational funds keep buying this crap, the greedy bastards who create it will keep selling it! It's the same old scam that's been going on for decades! Nothing ever changes! Except maybe it gets a little worse!

shadylady: We all know that there are always some people in any group who will make bad choices, but I want to stress that the vast majority of homeschoolers work just as hard as kids who attend public schools and that as a whole homeschoolers out-perform kids who attend public schools.

twister: It's not really fair to compare homeschoolers to public school kids as a whole since public schools educate a huge variety of children with all sorts of problems. You have severaly emotionally disturbed children, students who don't speak English, cognitively impaired children, etc., all attending public school and bringing down the average test score. Homeschool advocates always make unfair comparisons to make it appear as if homeschooling is superior to public schooling. The reality is that public school offers several advantages and that kids get a better overall education at public school, but homeschool still produces results almost as good.

Secrets of amazing teachers: What both sides of the education reform debate get wrong about autonomy and accountability
I've never believed in the natural-born-teacher narrative discussed here. It's always been my belief that there is no one type of person who becomes a good teacher. According to this article there are two approaches to improving the quality of teachers working at public schools: accountability and autonomy. The article says that both approaches are wrong and based on the myth of the natural-born-teacher. The article is thought-provoking, although it doesn't really offer a lot of insight into how to go about improving the skills of teachers, other than to point out that the methods being used now are ineffective.

pcslim: I enjoyed that article quite a bit. Given a choice between accountablity and autonomy I'd recommend autonomy for the most part, providing that we're talking about teachers who went through quality teacher preparation programs. The accountability model appeals to bureaucrats, but is rather unforgiving and reduces teaching to a means of producing high test scores, turning teaching into a rather souless profession.

Has This School District Gone Too Far? Gym Class Heart Rate Monitors Now Required
Invasive or not? I'm not sure if your heart rate is really personal information when it comes to exercise.

heart rate monitoring: Not a bad idea as far as I'm concerned. It provides useful information which is objective and relevant. It's not the teacher or coach subjectively trying to decide if kids are working hard or not. Then again what about situations where the monitor malfunctions? Does the kid get flunked?
