EFF Joins Amicus Brief in Support of Student Speech on Social Media
School administrators seem to be convinced that they can violate the civil rights of students and faculty under the guise of preventing disruptions in the learning environment. Their ability to do so is VERY LIMITED, but they have gotten away with it in some cases where individuals have failed to exercise their rights as citizens. The responsible thing to do is to always stand up to authorities any time that you believe that your rights are being violated. Remember that Ed Code is often inappropriately stretched to apply to situations that it doesn't apply to and that it is trumped by federal statutes protecting your rights.
Keefe sued the school administrators under 42 U.S.C. §1983, a federal statute that gives citizens a right to sue state government institutions or officials for violations of individual rights under the federal Constitution. He argued that the expulsion violated his free speech and due process rights under the First and Fourteenth Amendments. A federal trial judge in Minnesota disagreed and ruled in favor of the school administrators.

Typically local judges are in bed with local school officials and so this is no surprise, but wait until it goes up to the next level! Someone's going to learn a lesson about reality and it's not going to be pleasant for the corrupt school officials or the corrupt judge!

FBI Seizes 20 Boxes Of Documents Related To Los Angeles School District's $1.3 Billion iPad Program
Looks like someone may have gotten some kind of kickback. This article also does a nice job of bashing the Pearson software company...
...if only the district hadn't previously spent money purchasing laptops that were pricier than the $768 iPads (which also come bundled with $200 worth of Pearson software -- software found to be mostly useless by evaluators, who noted that only one classroom in the 245 surveyed was actually using it for daily work).

I'll refrain here from making any comments about how I feel about the software made by Pearson...

Los Angeles: Hopefully the local districts have not made the mistake of going the iPad route. Everything I hear is that Chromebooks are the best way to go. There are so many advantages to going with Google and Chromebooks that a district would have to have money to burn and instructional time to waste to go with anything else. As for educational software companies (such as Pearson), they've been ripping off school districts for decades now and it's about time someone exposed them for the crooks they are!

The schools I worked at back before retiring all had Apples and then Macintoshes. It looks like Google is taking over in the classroom. From everything I've heard it's all for the better. It's nice to see some competition. Like cactuspete says educational software companies always charge way too much for their software and the same goes for computer companies. Schools tend to have deep pockets and technology vendors have always exploited that to their greatest advantage. It's good to see the game change a little... finally!
