TJUSD Board Meeting - May 14, 2015

Postby blackturtle.us » Fri May 15, 2015 9:23 am

This meeting began ten minutes late and lasted almost one and a half hours. No explanation was given as to the late start.

1) Superintendent’s Report - Mr. Olney shared the following information:
a) Good California Exit Exam results with 93% of students taking the test at THS passing the test in English and Math.
b) Technology - Vector will soon be initiating a server consolidation process and beginning network monitoring. Also the new Chromebooks are working out well with lots of use by students.
c) Gym Roof - May not be completely done by graduation, but will not interfere with graduation being held in gym.
d) Governor’s Preliminary Budget Revision - No details yet, but it looks favorable for education. Details to be provided at meeting which Mr. Olney will attend on May 26.
2) Public Comments - Curtis Boutte (track coach) updated board regarding track season. He announced that two athletes qualified for CIF.
3) Personnel - Several individuals were approved to serve in the following positions: CIF Representative to League, Fall coaches for volleyball, football, and cheerleading squad, Summer School, student summer workers, pool attendants, and lifeguards.
4) Overnight Trips - Three overnight trips were approved: Leadership Camp, track overnight trip to attend track meet, and Senior Trip.
5) Surplus Books - 489 high school library books and 42 high school French textbooks were declared surplus and may be disposed of or donated.
6) Policies and Procedures - Several Board Policies and Administrative Regulations were updated. It took almost thirty minutes for Mr. Olney to summarize the changes for the board. Policies dealt with included child abuse prevention, student suspensions and expulsions, administration of medication and monitoring of health conditions, health care and emergencies, temporary athletic team coaches, temporary/substitute personnel, and volunteer assistance. Possibly the most interesting item discussed was the procedure to be used for providing sick leave pay for substitute teachers. This applies only to substitute teachers who have accrued 30 or more days of substitute service in a single year and who must miss a day of a multi-day assignment.
7) Although pool hours were not mentioned during the meeting, a handout was available. The pool will open May 25th. See the school website for details. (http://trona.k12.ca.us)
8) Next regular board meeting: June 11. Special board meeting: June 18.

Speaking of technology...
Student accused of hacking into computer, changing grades
Not only was there an arrest, but there is a possibility of jail time and a fine.

Is Sex Education Failing American Teens?
Oddly enough sex education which pushes abstinence doesn't result in the lowest teen birthrate. Actually when you think about it, that's exactly what you'd expect. When you push an agenda, kids (and people in general) tend to do the opposite. That's why intellectual honesty is always the best policy.
93% of Americans agree that sex education should be taught in schools, but what's the best approach to get teens to practice safe sex?

wildrose: Intellectual honesty is always the best policy, but many people are so blinded by their own beliefs that they are not able to think in a rational and unbiased manner. And then there's the whole problem with people who can't become emotionally detached enough to think clearly about anything!

TJUSD Board Meeting - May 14, 2015

Not to change the topic, but I heard an interesting factoid about popular music. It turns out that the reading level of the lyrics used in rap and hip hop music is at the first grade level. That explains a lot about why so many kids can barely read and are completely incapable of any kind of logical thought. Too much time spent on mindless entertainment makes one pretty much... well... mindless! LOL

Holland High School students to switch from iPads to Chromebooks
Everything I've heard is that this is the trend throughout the country.
The four-year-old iPads caused “district management” issues, said Superintendent Brian Davis. State mandated online assessments require use of a physical keyboard — which the iPad lacks — and the high unit cost of the iPad became an issue when considering replacements. "I also believe that the Chromebook from a student use perspective is viewed more as a learning tool whereas the iPad more of an entertainment tool," Davis said.

TJUSD Board Meeting - May 14, 2015

sandman: I really doubt that there is much of a correlation between reading level and the type of music that kids listen to and I doubt that what kids listen to has much of an impact on their reading level. People listen to music for entertainment. What you'd have to do is a study where kids are tested for their reading level and asked about their music preferences. I doubt there would be much difference between the music that high reading level kids like and the music that low reading level kids like.

OMG, Meme, Other Buzzwords Added To Merriam-Webster
Merriam-Webster added more than 1,700 words to its dictionary! Looks like schools may need to purchase updated dictionaries. Or maybe not. Most people just use online dictionaries anyways, so never mind!

Dictionaries: I have no plans to ever buy an actual dictionary ever again. The online version is plenty good for me! As for schools, it's probably not a bad idea for kids to use them, but probably not after the 8th grade.
