Other than a toddler, all present at this meeting were either school employees or board members. The following are the highlights of the meeting from my point of view:

1) Board Member Comments - A couple board members expressed excitement over equipment being installed by an educational technology company called onPoint.

2) Superintendent’s Report - Keith Tomes shared information about graduation ceremonies, summer projects (especially onPoint installation), and a PLC conference which several staff members attended.

3) Joseph Wolfe - More information about PLCs (Professional Learning Communities) as well as information about current student performance, providing a bit of a “before PLCs baseline” for the board. Wolfe discussed the PLC program’s focus on collaboration and assessment and explained how teachers will use data from assessment to work together to develop more effective teaching strategies. The addition of a PLC period will increase the number of periods for high school students from six to seven per day (except on the minimum day, which will remain on Wednesday). Periods will be shortened to keep the length of the school day about the same as during previous years.

4) Trona Teachers Association - The president of the local teachers’ union provided information about work being done during the summer by teachers in preparation for the 2016-2017 school year, the eagerness of teachers to be able to work with improved audio/visual/computer equipment and software, and of the need to improve communications between the teaching staff and the school board. A suggestion made was that board members be provided with email accounts which could be used to facilitate communication between them and the teaching staff.

5) Public Comments - The Cheer Coach briefed the board on fundraising activities and various events that cheerleaders were participating in during the summer months.

6) Compensation increase of 2% on-base and 11% off-schedule for certificated and classified management employees for the upcoming school year was approved.

7) Board Policy 9250 - Remuneration, Reimbursement and Othe Benefits - Revision of this policy was tabled for further discussion. The key question seemed to have to do with board member health benefits.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING: July 14, 2016

John Meeks, the danger of professional learning communities (PLC)
I wonder if PLCs are the next Common Core?
PLC = Professional Learning Conformity. Many administrators use the PLC movement as a guise under which they can mandate conformity among their faculty.

cactuspete: Schools need to do a better job of teaching coding skills and a tool like this could be put to good use in that regards. Hopefully this opportunity will not be ignored. It seems that schools in general often get distracted by what people refer to as glitter and shine or side-tracked by bureaucratic red tape and that they often fail to take advantage of substantive opportunities such as this.

Ceres swim coach accused of 'inappropriate communications' with a minor
Coaches should always be professional when communicating with student athletes. Any who fall below this standard should be removed from their coaching positions.

twister: If a female coach had done exactly the same thing, I'm willing to bet that she would not have been arrested. Crazy double-standard in cases like this.

twister & mrgreen: It's not as if the stereotypical lesbian coach isn't a thing that everyone knows about. Many lesbians marry men and have kids, but mess around with a female lover on the side. Some just like them young and that's where the stereotypical lesbian coach comes in. Somehow it's supposed to be worse when men do the same thing, but I'm for equality between the sexes and the same consequences should apply to both sexes equally.

Society views men as perverts and doesn't take the same view of females. So, when a man says something suggestive or inappropriate it's always judged from the perspective of the the worst case scenario. When a woman says exactly the same thing, she's given the benefit of the doubt. I agree that both sexes should be judged by the same standards and we all know in reality women are just as perverted as men, we just have more ways to hide it! ;)

Female Karate Teacher Arrested For Sending 11-Year-Old Student Nude Photos: Cops
This is a case where it wasn't just a lewd or suggestive comment. This one involved actual solicitation and a nude photo. The cops didn't have any choice other than to arrest her, but the scandal outrage would have been much greater had it been a male instructor.
