Hot playgrounds not safe for kids
This seems like commonsense, but not all parents have commonsense! ;)

Coaches should always be professional when communicating with student athletes. Any who fall below this standard should be removed from their coaching positions.

tronagirl wrote:twister & mrgreen: It's not as if the stereotypical lesbian coach isn't a thing that everyone knows about. Many lesbians marry men and have kids, but mess around with a female lover on the side. Some just like them young and that's where the stereotypical lesbian coach comes in. Somehow it's supposed to be worse when men do the same thing, but I'm for equality between the sexes and the same consequences should apply to both sexes equally.

Guidelines for determining if a coach is trying to use his/her position to gain inappropriate access to your child:
1) Does coach hold "closed" practice sessions? Can parents attend practices/workouts? If not, then the coach may have something to hide in the way he/she communicates with team members during workouts.
2) Does coach hold team meetings at his/her residence? If so, then the coach may be trying to get overly personal with team members. (Similarly, if the coach shows excessive interest in the personal lives of team members this might be a problem.)
3) Does coach have favorites? Are there kids that the coach picks on or kids that the coach is extra nice to. If so, watch out.

If the answer is yes to all three of these, then have a talk with the supervisor of the coach and clearly state your concerns.
Friendliness, camaraderie, esprit de corps, or team cohesiveness is one thing, but crossing the line behind the backs of parents is another thing.

West Sacramento teachers learn new techniques for teaching science
There weren't any actually new teaching techniques shown in this video. There were some cool demonstrations that may or may not be new. (Most likely not new, but fun nonetheless.) Teachers have been doing hands-on activities for decades, if not centuries, and so there was nothing actually new shown in this video. The problem always will be, and always has been, a matter of having time to enjoy engaging activities while covering all the curriculum required by the state. There is not enough time to do both and it's always been a judgement call as to what side to err on.

Clark County School Board trustee under fire for Facebook post about protesters
How easy is it to organize a recall vote when board members behave inappropriately?
Some community members demanded he apologize and resign from the board, which oversees the education of about 320,000 students. Others highlighted similarly questionable posts that have appeared on Child’s social media accounts before and after his surprise election in 2014 to a heavily Hispanic district. He’ll be up for election again in 2018.

Ex-Compton school board trustee gets prison time in sex case

More difficult than it should be. They say that it is hard to remove a bad teacher. Well, it's much more difficult to remove a bad board member.
Former Compton school board trustee Skyy De’Anthony Fisher, who committed an unwanted sex act on a sleeping man in a San Diego hotel room, was sentenced to six years in prison, Thursday, the Compton Herald has learned.

Judge sentences two former Donna school board trustees to prison on bribery charges
Here's another case where it took an awful lot to remove two school board members. There should be standards in place which board members are expected to follow and any time they violate those standards they are automatically forced to resign, but dishonest, unethical, and otherwise bad board members are not easy to get rid of! The type of thing described here is far too common, but politics at any level is corrupt in the USA.
Both trustees solicited cash bribes and concert tickets from a school district contractor, according to the nine-page federal indictment.

10 Craziest School Pranks
Several of these pranks are incredibly stupid and not even slightly funny, but two or three of them aren't too bad.

Funny detention slips given to kids
Many of these are pretty bizarre. Not sure what's wrong with these kids.
