tronagirl: I think you're right. It wasn't all that long ago that school started either the last week of August or the first week of September. Some friends tell me that they went to schools that didn't start until after Labor Day!

This is an oldie, but a goodie, and pertains to something that happened on the first day of school in Oklahoma a couple years ago!

CactusHugger: I feel sad for that lady. Judging by appearances (and I know it's wrong to judge a book by its cover, but...) she probably has no self-confidence and got drunk because of the anxiety she felt about her new job and then she blew it by showing up drunk and without pants. It's so sad and pathetic. Good-looking people don't have to deal with the same pressures that less attractive people have to deal with. They talk about white privilege and we all know that's a myth, but there is a privilege that goes along with being physically attractive (no matter what race you are a member of) that really does smooth the road and make life easier for people fortunate enough to be blessed in that way.

Play Is Serious Business

It is ironic that the rigorous push toward academia has crowded out play, since play is how we evolved to learn. Virtually all baby animals play – we’ve all seen puppies chase sticks or kittens wrestle with yarn, but did you know that an octopus will go nuts over a stack of Legos? For human children, play isn’t just a frivolous activity; it helps kids create social relationships and practice for adulthood. Through play, children experiment with different possibilities and take on different roles, learn how to get along with others, build physical and mental skills, and develop self-confidence. Play is serious business. So why is it so often treated as an afterthought by educators?

tronagirl: Appearances do matter and it's always been the case that good-looking people of any race tend to get treated better than less attractive people and that's completely independent of race. That said, it is the case that some people automatically dislike attractive people and so sometimes attractive people get treated poorly by people with an axe to grind. That poor lady who got drunk and showed up at her new job in such a mess that she lost her job on the first day! White as can be, but that's not the issue. No looks privilege for her! If only she had been black or hispanic and attractive, then she would have felt the power of privilege and wouldn't have needed to get drunk!

Attractive people do have a lot of advantages and race is really secondary. But being attractive isn't all about looks. It's also about behavior, how you dress, and other intangibles such as attitude and things people can sense about another person. Race has almost nothing to do with it. Most intelligent people realize that, but there are people who cling to out-dated ways of thinking and the media has pushed those ideas too. We need to move on and stop living in the past.

PRIVILEGE: If there is any privilege based on race it's Asian privilege. The average Asian household makes more money than the average white household. Asian kids have fewer school disciplinary issues than white kids. It goes on and on. I think there is most likely more of a correlation between being attractive and privilege, than between race and privilege. The difficult thing about identifying what is attractive versus what is not attactive is that it's such a subjective thing to measure and it has so many different facets as pointed out by panamint_patty.

Parents outraged after school bans rap music on buses
This is so STUPID! Of course, rap music is banned. Anyone who's listened to more than a few rap songs realizes that many of the songs are full of profanity and drug references and that degradation of women is a common theme. The hypocrisy here is that the same lady who called banning rap music racist would have very likely been the first to complain about kids being exposed to inappropriate sexual and violent lyrics in the same rap music had it been allowed. It's like schools can't win one way or the other. Either they are too permissive or too strict. Someone is always going to be complaining about something and making a big deal over nothing!
