TJUSD Board Meeting - January 12, 2017

Postby blackturtle.us » Fri Jan 13, 2017 9:51 am

The agenda for this meeting consisted of one business item and was the shortest agenda I've seen for a regular meeting and I've been attending these meetings since 2006. There were no community members present. Other than one student and five board members, all present were TJUSD employees. Nevertheless, there were a few items from the meeting worth mentioning:

1) Get Focused / Stay Focused - The district is considering the possibility of replacing the current AVID program with another program called Get Focused / Stay Focused. During the superintendent's report, Keith Tomes explained that this new program includes the college prep components which are part of AVID, but also focuses on career preparation beginning in the ninth grade.

2) Water Damage During Winter Break - The elementary school sustained water damage during winter break in two locations: near the office and in a classroom next to one of the restrooms. In the first case, flooring had to be ripped up, involving the removal of asbestos. As a result a company specializing in asbestos removal was hired to take care of that problem. Precautions were taken to keep staff and students safe. In the second case, the sixth grade class had to be relocated to a different classroom.

3) Loma Linda Dental Program - Elementary principal, Alan Tsubota, briefed the board on free dental work being offered to elementary students. A screening was conducted this week and a team from Loma Linda will return late in February to do work on students with dental issues. Not only will a room be set up to do this work, but a mobile dental office will also be parked in the elementary parking lot to facilitate more involved dental work.

4) TTA Report - TTA president updated the board on on-going payroll issues and thanked the district for working hard to resolve these issues.

5) 2015-2016 Financial Report - Financial officer presented report and talked mostly about two findings: 1) Food services is deficit spending, and 2) procedures need to be developed to track fixed assets. In the case of the deficit spending by the cafeteria, it was acknowledged in the report that the small size of the district makes it difficult to achieve "economies of scale" and combined with other factors makes it impossible for the district not to deficit spend in this area. As for fixed assets, procedures to track them are being developed.

NEXT REGULAR MEETING: FEBRUARY 09, 2017

Obama Education Secretary: Divesting In Public Education A 'Mistake'
Outgoing Education Secretary John King discusses the importance of public education as confirmation hearings for Trump's Education Secretary, a charter schools and voucher advocate, are pushed back.

This short video provides a good overview of some progress made during the last eight years and some concerns about possible mistakes which may be made by the next administration.

Students At Buena Park High Excpress Concern Over Racist Posts On Social Media
Here's the problem, although the image was taken on school property, the offensive material was added after the fact. So, I'm not convinced that the school had the right to get involved. Obviously, though, if the parents of the students busted for this social media posting agree with the administration, then that's the end of the story. If they object, then the school could have one heck of legal battle to deal with.

TEACHERS SEASON 2 OFFICIAL TRAILER
This seems like it might be a little edgy, but mostly funny.

CLASS FROM HELL!
According to some people, children are innocent and full of wonder. Those people are out of touch with reality!

TEACHERS TV SHOW: It's snarky and somewhat funny, but mostly it's just snarky. I'm not sure who it's supposed to appeal to, but it probably isn't actually a hit TV series so much as it it a mediocre show that's worth watching only if you're too tired to do anything else and it's too early to hit the hay!

Tim Kaine Exposes Betsy DeVos's Charter School Scam
This Betsy DeVos seems to know next to nothing about education and yet she's supposed to serve as education secretary? She's a disaster. Hopefully they don't confirm her.

Betsy Devos Embarrassed by Sen. Al Franken at Hearing of Trump's Pick for Sec. of Education :smack:
This lady is so incredibly unprepared and unqualified that it's hard to believe she's even being considered for the job! Only an incompetent buffoon would recommend her for the job...

Betsy DeVos is an idiot and probably the last person in the world who should even be considered for secretary of education. I'd like to see her attempt to give an impromptu lesson on something like converting mixed numbers to improper fractions. Something tells me that she'd be worse than just incompetent in her ability to deliver such a lesson. My point is that she should at least have several years of classroom teaching experience if anyone is going to consider her for such an important job.

Betsy DeVos- New Education Secretary-KNOWS NOTHING!
This lady is unbelievably unqualified. As a minimum, the education secretary should have at least five years of full-time classroom experience in a public school setting. Without people who know what it's like in the trenches, there is no hope of doing anything productive.
