That restroom scene with the mop reminds me a little of a famous scene from Deliverance which was released way back in 1972.

If they did it back in 1972 to make hillbillies look like degenerated animals, why not do the same kind of thing now to make jocks look bad. Of course, it would have been funnier if the jocks had told their victim to SQUEAL LIKE A PIG!

And here's the climax of the scene. WARNING: Graphic content, but apparently seeing as the show is targeted at a high school audience, most kids probably either saw the scene or heard about the scene.

Ultimately the 13 Reasons Why scene is pretty stupid. The writing is unimaginative and relying on an outrageous scene like this for the shock value in order to hold the attention of an audience is just plain lazy.

13 Reasons Why Star Devin Druid Addresses Graphic Sodomy Scene Controversy
Rather than dealing with realistic and common issues, they went for the big ticket items. I don't think they portrayed anything about these issues in a realistic or helpful manner. Instead they just used the sensationalism to attract eyeballs. In this clip one of the main actors tries to justify the sensationalism. He does a credible job, but he's still full of crap! BTW, the show is super popular with young people and with females more so than males. I've seen parts of a few episodes and find it extremely contrived and out-of-touch with reality. It's more like a graphic soap opera than a presentation with any real social value.

13 Reasons Why is a show about drama queens made for drama queens. The psychopaths and sociopaths are just thrown in to increase the drama. It's more like a choreographed reality show than an actual theatrical presentation. Instead of taking the time to think through the realistic social dynamics of a high school, the writers work hard to create an other worldly distortion of the reality of the high school environment. What impact does this have on kids? Does it alter their expectations and mindset in a way which like a self-fulfilling prophecy makes negative situations more likely to occur? That's hard to say, but it's important that adults are aware of this type of media presentation and how it might detach young people from reality.

13 REASONS WHY: Considering that a similarly graphic scene was part of a famous movie in 1972, the hubbub over the mop scene seems like an over-reaction to me. Kids talk about worse things all the time. Even grade school kids are completely aware of this kind of thing and so although it is disgusting, it's not anywhere close to being uniquely disgusting or anything out of the ordinary by modern standards.

'Little House on the Prairie' condemned by PC police
It's very sad that extremists are working hard to ban American classics.

LEFTISTS banning books... again!

Their agenda is to degrade this country to the point where nothing of value is left.

France may require national service for teens
National service for all teens? Probably not a good idea, but unpaid service should be required of all teenagers fifteen years and older who are not on track to graduate from high school. Just set up work camps which enforce strict discipline and require those "enrolled" to do lots of work both of the menial and academic kinds. BTW, students "enroll" themselves by not keeping their grades up. Any students with a 1.5 GPA or lower would be automatically "enrolled" and any student who "drops out" or is truant for more than a small number of days each year would automatically be "enrolled" without exception. A program like this would keep aimless teens off the streets and hopefully motivate them to keep their grades up.

Fareed: The idea of meritocracy is under siege
Racial quotas have caused a decline in the quality of public education in the USA. Here in California the legislature actually has created a system which penalizes school districts for disciplining students who belong to different racial minorities. People should get what they deserve no matter what race they happen to belong to. This means that successful students should be rewarded with advancement into elite programs and that disruptive students should be eliminated from the classroom environment so as not to hold back students willing to work hard to succeed. Common sense to be sure, but here in California the idiots in charge have no common sense.

wildrose: The focus on race has distracted educators on the real problem: EDUCATING CHILDREN. Children are individuals. Some are well-behaved and hard working and others are uncooperative and less than bright. Statistics on race are used to give under performing kids an EXCUSE. There are no excuses in a meritocracy and that's what we need in this country: NO EXCUSES! Children need to be held accountable for their behavior. There needs to be real consequences for failure to cooperate. Teachers shouldn't be expected to stand on their heads and do cartwheels in order to persuade children to pay attention and do their work. CHILDREN SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO WORK and anything less should not be tolerated!
