Emergency Board Meeting - July 31st, 2019
Update on condition of facilities.
Basically, the high school is not safe for students to occupy and getting it up to legal safety standards within the near future is not going to happen. So, the recommendation is that the high school will be moved into the A-wing of the "Round School" with all the elementary grades being moved to the B-wing. Head of maintenance gave a tour of the elementary and the high school facility. Not only were three buildings at the high school yellow tagged, but there are asbestos abatement issues to deal with and lots of concrete repairs are required to meet safety standards. Additionally, several water line ruptures must be repaired and the condition of the sewage system is unknown at this point. Although portable classrooms could be brought in, the cost of this alternative is prohibitive. The district is applying for a J13A waiver to allow for a shortened school year to accommodate a late start on September 3rd.
A meeting will be held tomorrow and the board will vote to accept or reject this proposed plan. The public portion of the meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the elementary library. One board member has received lots of phone calls from parents concerned about rumors regarding "doubling up at the round school" and tomorrow is the opportunity for the public to share their feelings pertaining to this issue with the board. Although no one is happy with the proposal, it appears to be the most viable solution to the problems caused by recent earthquakes.
