Reportedly schools planning on live, in-person classes are asking students and staff to self-screen and to stay home if they have any covid-19 symptoms. The problem with that is that the list of covid-19 symptoms is expansive and includes: chest congestion, temperature, nasal congestion, sore throat, upset stomach, diarrhea, and general body aches. (Additionally, swollen testicles and chest pain are two less common symptoms which have been added to the list.) If staff and students take this literally, then they would be expected to stay home quite frequently, which could be more than just a little problematic, it seems to me. Add to this the fact that people can spread the virus long before symptoms ever appear and it seems ridiculous to even consider in-person education at this time.

There is no solution other than staying away from other people that will stop the spread of the virus. You can have it without even realizing it and be spreading the virus the whole time. You could test every two weeks, but still wind up getting it two days after a test and be spreading it during the interval before the next test. You could have symptoms, but really have something else. You might not have symptoms, but actually have it. You might dismiss symptoms and go about your business as if there were no issues only to be spreading the virus the whole time. Social distancing and masks are not anywhere close to a guarantee that the virus won't be transferred. The closest thing there is to a guarantee is just staying completely away from other people. Even that is difficult, but it is the best method available to ensure the containment of the virus.

Three Arizona Teachers Caught COVID-19, Only Two Survived
One of the biggest controversies on the internet right now is whether or not schools should reopen. That's a little misleading since it's really a debate between distance learning and in person learning and then there are various modified forms of in person learning being proposed. The big question really comes down to whether or not in person learning is worth the risk and no one really knows the answer to that one. Do we err on the side of caution and choose distance learning or do we roll the dice an see what happens with in person learning? Rolling the dice could result in a lot of dead people and so I don't see how there really is a choice here.

pcslim posted this in the COVID-19 Pandemic thread in the Technology and Gadgets forum. I think he makes some good points. How do we open schools when churches, restaurants, and movie theaters are closed? The school environment is much more likely to spread germs than churches, restaurants, or movie theaters. That's just obvious!
pcslim wrote:Dr Mike Ryan on the role children play in COVID-19 transmission
Ask any teacher, schools are breeding grounds for germs. Teachers get sick more often than most adults because they're around children. Children spread germs. Closing schools slows the spread of germs more than is the case for any other social venue. If churches, bars, restaurants, and movie theaters are closed, then schools should be closed. Those other locations do not result in much transmission of germs compared to schools, not even close. The public outcry has to do with parents relying on schools for babysitting. It has very little to do with educational quality. It's all about free babysitting and the news media is going along with public sentiment in order to maintain viewership.

Let's talk about opening schools, talking points, teachers, and counting....
Opening schools is too risky. Even with social distancing the virus spreads and people get sick and some people die.

Let's talk about sending your kid back to school if you have doubts....
When there is doubt, it's always best to play it safe. Distance learning is the only safe way to go.

The numbers are going through the roof in some states and it's only a matter of time before California is in the same situation.

Schools in hotspots
The more distance between people the better. Most people I know are keeping the number of trips to the store to a minimum and going out in public as little as possible. The virus can be stopped if we are disciplined and we maximize our social distancing to the greatest extent possible.

Texas teacher writes will ahead of new school year amid COVID-19 pandemic
Using the 5% daily infection rate as a guideline makes a lot of sense. I don't know what the daily infection rate is for the Ridgecrest/Trona area, but the two towns should be considered to be in the same area since so many people from Ridgecrest work in Trona and since so many people from Trona shop in Ridgecrest. The intermixing of people from the two towns is substantial and even though the towns are in separate counties, they should be treated as one functional area.

This is a post from the COVID-19 Pandemic thread located in the Technology and Gadgets forum. During the last couple of minutes Bill Gates talks about schools and distance learning. He seems quite optimistic that distance learning can be effective during the pandemic and the numbers make it clear that distance learning is the only sane option at this time.

Things are worse than expected. We figured that things would get better during the summer, but they didn't. Almost for sure things will get quite a bit worse during the fall. It would not be surprising if we reach 200K deaths due to covid before the end of the year. Working from home has worked well for Microsoft. Jobs that can be done from home, should be done from home for the duration of this pandemic.
