JUDY BLUME BOOKS AND OTHER SEXUALLY EXPLICIT BOOKS IN SCHOOL LIBRARIES
Judy Blume is a highly respected author and many of her books include sexual themes and sometimes she can be somewhat explicit. Kids as young as eight-years-old read her books and most school libraries include her most popular books.
WikiPedia wrote:Blume was one of the first young adult authors to write novels about the controversial topics of masturbation, menstruation, teen sex, birth control, and death.

I noticed three new posts to the CRAZY BOARD MEMBERS thread which were all about books available at public schools and parent complaints regarding those books. I propose that those posts be moved to this thread since I think this is a topic unto itself!

This is more about a crazy lady at a school board meeting than about crazy school board members, but I'll post here although it could have gone into the SEXXX ED thread. The problem here is that this crazy lady is upset about what psychologists see as common and normal behavior. The author of the book simply included an account of an interaction which is part of the normal childhood development of many people. Percentages are hard to estimate, but probably somewhere between ten and sixty percent of males have a homosexual experience during their early years. It's not pornographic. It's not something that only pedophiles would include in a book. It's just part of the human experience and being shocked by something as mundane as such passages in a book is the real problem here, not the passages included in the book!

Literature is supposed to be a reflection of the human experience and that means the human experience of all humans, not just a few priggish prudes. The egocentricity of this woman is appalling. Was the book age appropriate? For some kids yes and some kids no, but why should the kids who would benefit from such a book not have access to it just because some self-righteous airhead doesn't like it?

I attended Trona Elementary and THS and I read Judy Blume books on both campuses. The library had almost all her books including "Forever"! Go to this link to see a few of the topics she deals with in her books:

It sounds like she says the name of the book is "Lawn Boy." The problem is that I found at least three different books by that name. One was an "Editor's Pick" on Amazon. Another one is definitely a children's book and I'm not sure about the other one. I'm not exactly shocked by the oral sex between fourth graders excerpt.

On the Banning of Looking for Alaska
Context matters! A sex scene taken out of context cannot be properly interpreted. Paraphrasing the author: Emotionally empty oral sex isn't likely to be fulfilling and that was the point of the sex scene. If all a parent does is read the paragraph or two containing the sex scene, then the parent would completely miss the point. So many people nowadays completely miss the point of just about everything and it's important that we train kids not to miss the point!

I Am Not A Pornographer: In which John argues that his novel "Looking for Alaska" is not pornographic and should not be removed from the curriculum at Depew High School.
Here's John again talking about his novel and the way it was misunderstood by a group of people who must apparently be illiterate! How else could they fail to put the scene in its proper context?

Banning Books In The 21st Century
Two series which are popular with kids (Harry Potter and Captain Underpants) are banned in some public libraries and at some schools. Why not just let kids read what they want to read? If they're reading, then they are learning. If all the good books are banned, then it might be hard to motivate kids to read.
Would you walk a mile for me?
