Back in the 1990s the THS library had a bunch of magazines which wound up getting banned. One was Rolling Stone Magazine and I recall Mr. Haughton (history teacher) speaking up in favor of keeping the magazine available to students, but there were those who thought it was inappropriate. Sure there were 7th graders at THS and maybe some of the subject matter in the magazines was too mature for them, but students in the upper grades deserve to have access to a diverse range of opinions on matters of social importance. I'm in favor of preparing students for the real world and not trying to keep them in the dark!

Mom BLASTS School Board for Pedophilic Book
This is another overblown rant about imaginary issues. Just like democrats rant on and on about imaginary racism, conservatives like to engage in ridiculous tirades about imaginary pedophilia. Both sides are equally out of balance and neither side does a good job of discussing the issues. It's all stupid emotionality devoid of intelligence, rationality, or logic. They seem to be hopelessly addicted to infantile name-calling.

VA mom goes viral for confronting school board over explicit books
The problem here is that the mom made a snap judgement without taking into the consideration the context provided by the book. The news person had a responsibility to press her on that issue and the news person failed to fulfill that responsibility. Lots of trigger words are thrown around in this news clip, but they are not used in an accurate manner. First of all, simply describing a sexual interaction is not pornography. Secondly, there's no indication that the books promote any form of illegal activity. For instance, one passage which this mom objects to is a passage where a character in one of the books doesn't understand why someone he is interacting with as an adult is acting a certain way despite the exploratory sexual experience they shared while they were both children. Some people choose to live in ignorance underneath a metaphorical rock, I prefer truth and reality.

I knew what cornhole meant by the time I was eight. I thought it was gross and sort of funny that anyone would want to do that! :poop:

Many years later I found out that there was a game which people played with their family called cornhole. I thought that was extremely strange and even bizarre. Who the hell would name a backyard game after a sexually explicit act? Next thing you know there will be a game called FUDGEPACKER that people play at family reunions.

Literature is supposed to be a reflection of the human experience and that means the human experience of all humans, not just a few priggish prudes. The egocentricity of this woman is appalling. Was the book age appropriate? For some kids yes and some kids no, but why should the kids who would benefit from such a book not have access to it just because some self-righteous airhead doesn't like it?

dzrtdwg: I had a similar experience when I was very young. A friend told me that her family liked to play cornhole in their front yard. I was like:
:wtf:
Like you say, who the heck would name a game after a messy sex act like that? And with family members? And in the front yard?!! Some people believe in the slogan "Incest is best!" but who would engage in that kind of activity in the FRONT YARD?!!

Some parents in Hudson believe outrage over writing prompt book is out of line
Parents need to be mature enough to realize that their children are mature enough to discuss social issues in a mature manner. The key word here is MATURE and many people never get there!

School Board Derailed By Insane X-Rated Book Rant
Hell, the kids probably watch donkey sex videos on their phones on the way to school and so what's the big deal if they read a just barely sexually explicit passage in a book? Why do these conservative morons obsess over this stuff? If a brief sexual scene motivates kids to read, then let them read!

Jim Haughton was a good man and he believed that his students were intelligent enough to be able to discuss social issues in a fair and honest way. He would not have gotten along at all with the narrow-minded idiots currently running things!
