Summer 2014

Postby cactuspete » Sun May 18, 2014 8:29 am

According to weather.com, the high temperatures on both Friday and Saturday were 101 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale. The first day over the century commemorates the beginning of summer around here as far as I'm concerned and although purists may insist that the Summer Solstice (June 21) is the first day of summer, I let the thermometer determine the first day of summer and for all intents and purposes May 16 was the first day of SUMMER 2014. So rejoice, for SUMMER has arrived!!!

It looks like of the major passes, only Tioga Pass is still closed.

According to this page even Sherman Pass is open!

As far as I'm concerned it's not summer until all the major passes are open. So we're waiting on Tioga and then it's summer!
It wasn't exactly a good year for snow.

Summer begins in the desert with the first day that breaks one hundred. Summer begins in the High Sierra with the opening of all the passes and paved routes. Those are the rules and don't forget it!

Anyone care to predict the longest run of 100+ degree days this summer? I predict we have at least one run of 40 days straight. I'm not sure what the record is, but it's probably something like 60 days straight.

crusty: Looks like we got two more days over 100 in the forecast for early next week. Hope you got your cooler running cuz it's heating up! And BTW, many people consider Memorial Day Weekend to be the official beginning of summer and guess what? Memorial Day is this weekend!

The results for May are now in with there being FOUR days that topped the CENTURY MARK. And they were:
May 16 at 101 F degrees
May 17 at 101 F degrees
May 26 at 103 F degrees
May 27 at 102 F degrees
Temperatures are according to weather.com, FYI.

CrustyOldFart: There will most likely be more days over 100 during the first ten days of June than there were during all of May, but I won't count my chickens before they hatch although I might as well cuz it's gonna happen!

Well, it looks like your prediction panned out. There were SIX days at 100 or higher during the first TEN days of June:
June 5: 100
June 6: 101
June 7: 103
June 8: 106
June 9: 107
June 10: 104
All on the F scale of course!

10 Things to do This Summer! :sun:
Interesting suggestions, but you could just start making videos. The girls on this channel have made a ton of videos and now have over 701 million views. Converted into dollars paid to them by YouTube that's somewhere between $700,000 and $1,400,000. There's seven girls sharing that money, but that's a lot of money for kids. Their videos are really simple too. It's not like they have fancy gear or complicated scripts or any of that.
