People need to realize that many of the so-called cabins listed in CrustyOldFart's list which was originally posted by James Sel on the old forum, aren't much more than shacks and really, old shacks at that. BTW, I don't see the Lemoigne Cabin on that list.

sandman: I think most people are just looking for an interesting destination for a hike and not a place to spend the night. Only a few of the cabins are nice enough to spend the night in and even at that there is always the fear of hantavirus. I'd be very reluctant to spend the night in even the nicest of these cabins. A few years ago some people died of hantavirus after staying in tent cabins in Yosemite. If you can contract the disease there, then the chances of being exposed are even greater in ANY of the local cabins. All it takes is a few rodent droppings.

BoraxBill: Good point. When I step inside an old cabin I am very careful not to stir up any dust. It would probably be a better idea not to step into an old cabin at all, but I can't resist looking around and exploring. The threat of hantavirus should be enough to overcome my curiosity, however.

sandman: Curiosity gets the best of me too. After all I'm only human, which of course is exactly why we are vulnerable to deadly viruses in the first place and so obviously we should know better, but then again life is not without its risks.

Bob and Ward's cabin - Salt Basin
Coordinates: 35°37'30"N 116°25'42"W
Salt Basin, in the NW Avawatz Mountains (southern end of Death Valley), is a special place, made all the more special by the presence of "Bob and Ward's" cabin, just off the Harry Wade Road. This cabin is near one of the entrances to Death Valley. The cabin is on public land, administered by the Bureau of Land Management through the Barstow District office.

panamint_patty: I've visited that cabin a few times and it is one of the nicer public cabins in the general area. Judging by all the shell casings, it apparently gets visited quite a bit by gun nuts. Nothing against gun nuts, but they tend to ruin the sense of solitude a place like that would otherwise provide. It's like they love the noise of the big city so much that they just gotta export it out to our otherwise peaceful desert.
