Breakthrough gene therapy approved in fight against cancer
The FDA requires all sorts of trials before something like this gets approved and so it probably works! This is one of the first cases of a "personalized medicine" type of therapy being approved.

Dr Burzynski already did this years ago and was constantly raided by the FDA. Makes me wonder if his work wasn't finally stolen by big pharma. Still I can't see them going through with it because they are making too much money with conventional cancer treatments. I wonder what is really going on.

Personalized Medicine

Personalized cancer therapy utilizes an understanding of each patient’s genetic make-up to unravel the biology of their cancer. Using this information, our physicians attempt to identify treatment strategies that may be more effective and cause fewer side effects than would be expected with standard treatments. By performing genetic tests and analyses, our physicians can customize treatment to each patient’s needs.

surfsteve: Calling what Burzynski does an example of personalized medicine only works if you are using an entirely different definition of the term. What we are talking about here is actual genetic testing (determining which gene variants an individual has in his/her genome). Burzynski only offers patients a form of chemotherapy. He doesn't use the same substances that conventional oncologists use, but his therapy is equally crude and probably does not in reality yield results that would be seen as very impressive. My understanding of this thread is that we are discussing therapies based on and tailored to the actual genetics of individuals. That's something that could not be determined back when Burzynski first introduced his treatments.

Complex Biological Computer Commands Living Cells
The implications of this kind of research are mind-boggling. This ain't some charlatan battling it out with the FDA. This is for real!
Researchers have developed a biological computer that functions inside living bacterial cells and tells them what to do, according to a report published today in Nature. Composed of ribonucleic acid, or RNA, the new “ribocomputer” can survive in the bacterium E. coli and respond to a dozen inputs, making it the most complex biological computer to date.
