I don't know about the weight issue, but I'm sure they'll be pretty expensive. Maybe not the individual tiles themselves, but the system to harvest the energy from them is likely to be pretty pricey. Not sure how it will compare to systems currently available. It would be nice to have some energy independence, but that all depends on how much it costs!

What If Everyone Lived Like Americans?
One way to deal with energy issues is to cut consumption and it looks like Americans have a lot that they could cut! (And we'd probably all be better off in many ways if we did!)

shadylady: Lifestyle changes probably would make more difference than any change in technology that is likely to become available any time in the near future. We could probably cut half our energy usage just by planning better, being less wasteful, and making a few alterations in the food we eat and the products we buy. No wonder the rest of the world looks at us as a nation of spoiled, lazy ignoramuses!

Surviving Disaster: Gas Vs. Solar Generators
What happens if a major disaster shuts down the power grid for several days or weeks? I like the solar option since it'll work even if the gas supply runs out.

Power-Blox uses swarm intelligence to create autonomous 'Internet of energy' micro-grids
The ability to store energy generated by solar panels is something most people desire, but that ability can be very expensive. These units are two or three thousand dollars each and provide that ability which is nice to have if you literally live off-the-grid or during a power outage.
At its simplest, a single Power-Blox 200 series cube and solar panel can function as an off-grid power supply, with the unit's 1.2 kilowatt-hour battery and 230V AC / 200W inverter providing enough electricity for "one small fridge, a television, three LED lights (7W each)" and a mobile phone charger. A larger capacity system can be built by adding multiple units, simply by stacking them on top of each other like LEGO blocks to create towers or "Power-Walls."

How do solar water heating systems work?
This would work quite well in sunny climates, but not so good in areas which are cloudy or that are too far north or south.

DIY Solar Panel Installation? Sounds crazy, but this guy makes it seem doable, although not quite easy.

Michael Moore Admits the Truth
It seems odd that a guy who eats enough food to keep three people alive would be saying that there are too many people on the planet.
