Can We Make Super Athletes By Modifying Genes?
A new trend in sports may be something called Gene Doping and scientists have already identified a number of gene targets which may be used to improve athletic performance. Although athletic commissions are looking into ways to detect gene doping, it may turn out that this sort of thing is impossible to detect.

New Study Makes Great Strides in Understanding Human Height
Nearly 700 gene variants linked to height have been identified
Apparently height is a pretty complex trait. That being said, I'd be willing to bet that height is for the most part determined by no more than ten genes.
Scientists believe that about 80 percent of a person’s height is hereditarily determined, with environmental factors such as nutrition determining the rest... Researchers studied the genomes of 253,288 people from Europe, North America and Australia, all with European ancestry and found 424 gene regions with 697 gene variants that are linked to height. Many of the genes identified were not previously known to have an effect on skeletal growth.

Shared genetic aetiology of puberty timing between sexes and with health-related outcomes
The problem here is that the age at which voices broke is based on recollection and we all know that memory can be pretty inaccurate. In a study like this the difference between a few months could make a huge difference, but with data collected from 55,871 men the effect of inaccuracies is likely to be greatly reduced since it would be just "statistical noise" that would be easy to disregard.
Here, we report the first large-scale GWAS (genome-wide association study) of puberty timing in males, based on recalled age at voice breaking in men in the 23andMe study. By combination with data on recalled age at menarche in women, we show that the genetic architecture of puberty timing has a substantial shared component between males and females, which also overlaps the genetic basis of several health-related traits and diseases.

Gene Editing Tool CRISPR Is Making Scientists Face The Hard Questions
Lots of potential with this technology, but as is usually the case, plenty of cause for concern.

What is CRISPR & How Could It Edit Your DNA?
More info on this interesting technology. Lots of potential, mostly for good, but technophobes always like to accentuate the negative.

Groundbreaking DNA tech stuck in patent fight
As one viewer commented:
And as Berkeley and MIT fight it out over who gets the money, the fame, and the chicks and deployment is further delayed, Big Pharma will jump in and buy it and then shelve it as it would kill all demand for the treatments they love putting people on forever. Curing things is not good for business.

Synthetic Life Has Been Streamlined And Is Ready To Be Put To Work
At this point it appears that the smallest viable genome contains about 473 genes, but scientists don't understand the function of approximately one-third of those genes.

Genetic testing could soon help understand transatlantic slave trade
Historic records can be misleading for a number of obvious reasons, but genetics tells no lies!
Scientific innovations could help our understanding of the transatlantic slave trade as most of the documentation comes from shipping records, limiting our knowledge and leaving the average African American with little to no information about their roots.

A programming language for living cells
This is interesting...
“You could be completely naive as to how any of it works. That’s what’s really different about this,” Voigt says. “You could be a student in high school and go onto the Web-based server and type out the program you want, and it spits back the DNA sequence.”
