Genetics of Fitness

FitnessGenes
This is an interesting website. Move this to another thread if necessary, but I think this is a new concept for this message board and a really interesting one too. The page linked to provides a list of genes which are especially related to fitness. What works for some people, doesn't work as well for other people. That's true of exercise routines and dietary patterns.

The same general rules of nutrition and fitness may apply to more or less all normal humans, but the Devil is in the details. Genetic testing is the best way to find out more about the details and to fine tune a fitness and nutrition program to the genetic profile of each individual. All this is kind of new and so I expect this approach to become increasingly effective as time goes on... and also to become increasingly popular!

Genetic tests promised to help me achieve peak fitness. What I got was a fiasco
This is an excellent article. The author took a lot of time to compare genetic testing products from different companies and the recommendations they make based on the results. Although this article is about a year and a half old, it's clear that these products have not developed to the point where they are truly useful. I think there is a lot of potential, but it'll take some time for the science to develop to the point where these tests become useful.
But among the scores of data points, I found 20 genetic variants that showed up on two or more test results. The companies all gave me the same genetic readout on those variants, so I have little doubt they correctly analyzed the cells in the cheek swab I’d sent them. In six cases, however, the interpretation I got from one company directly contradicted the interpretation from another.

And in one case, two companies cited the same journal article to support their opposing conclusions.

Genetics and Fitness
It's the old nature versus nurture debate only rephrased as genetics versus exercise. Obviously it's not 100% one or the other, but the important question has to do with which exercises are most appropriate for people with different genetic profiles. This guy doesn't really answer that question, but at this point no one really can.

Pathway Fit®
Great sales pitch, but how much useful info can they really provide? Again, I think the science is not there yet. All these ideas are great ideas and eventually tests will be developed that answer all these questions, but I think this company is over-selling it's product.
