Seems like keeping prisoners busy reading books would be something that people running prisons would want to do. Just about any book should be allowed with the exception of books on a few obvious topics. But the potential good almost always outweighs the possible negatives.

For the most part our criminal justice system works. However, more emphasis should be put on property crimes and crimes involving actual violence. We should also avoid "low evidence" types of crimes which are mostly based on accusations which are difficult to prove. Classic he-said-she-said crimes are often based on false accusations and unless we are willing to hold false accusers fully accountable, there should be a raising of the bar when it comes to these types of crimes. By returning to an emphasis on property crimes and physically violent crimes, we get at the root of the matter. Once in the system prisoners should earn their way out of prison. It should not be enough to simply "do the time," there must be something accomplished. Whether it be book reports, educational course credits, or something else along those lines, there should be something measurable other than time as the criteria for release back into society. Moreover, the penalties for committing property crimes and physically violent crimes should be increased so that we don't see criminals released as quickly as is now the case. To accomplish this more efficient and cost-effective incarceration systems must be developed. Also the standard of care required in prisons should be lowered to facilitate lower costs. Keeping the system simple and cost-effective will greatly benefit society.
