$2000 for an out of the box unit is a lot of money. This DIY unit is under $700 and provides a fair amount of power.

I really like those solar home generators, but they are a bit on the expensive side! Possibly if these were mass manufactured the price would drop. Then again, just having solar panels installed on the roof would be the way to go although that's even more expensive, at least that would be a more permanent solution.

Solid State Batteries & the Future of Energy Storage
Lots of science in this video, but the bottom line is greater energy density which translates to smaller batteries which store more energy. This combined with solar panels could mean that people will be able to store energy collected during the day to run stuff at night. That's already possible, but this kind of breakthrough could mean greater efficiency and capacity at a lower cost.

Solar Generators: worth the money? Inergy Kodiak after using 1 year
During a long term energy outage it might be impossible to get gas. Solar is a viable alternative.

How long it would take to recharge a battery I do not know, but it is an interesting proof of concept presentation. Not sure how much difference it makes in terms of the amount of power generated whether an alternator or a generator.
