Interestingly, this video was posted on the blackturtleshow channel a couple months before Gates gave his TedTalks presentation and before this Vox interview. So, I take it back, blackturtle.us for president!!!

What Coronavirus Symptoms Look Like, Day By Day
What I've heard is that COVID-19 is more in the category of viral pneumonia than influenza. It's more of a respiratory thing than a digestive system thing. That's not to say that different people experience different sets of symptoms, but in the worst cases it's something that attacks the lungs. People also wind up with other forms of damage, but the deadly part is what happens with the lungs.

What does ‘flatten the curve’ mean? :prof:
This seems like a no-brainer, but it might to be obvious to the mathematically impaired!

County Health Order March 17, 2020
It's pretty self-explanatory:
The County is offering the following clarifications to the County Health Officer order issued on Tuesday, March 17, which can be viewed here.
The order requires the cancellation of public or private gatherings of people through April 6. The order defines “gathering” as “any event or convening that brings together people in a single room or single space at the same time.” The order applies to house parties, family reunions, church and religious events, funerals, weddings, quinceañeras, festivals, picnics, and other similar gatherings of people.

California is up to 27 deaths at this point, which doesn't seem like much, but we are at the bottom of the curve. The population of Spain is just over 40 million (roughly the same as California). They have 1720 deaths, but they started seeing a rapid increase in deaths before the first death in California. California only has 1420 confirmed cases at this point. That is projected to double several times in the next few weeks and so we may see 2840 in a few days, 5680 a few days after that, then over 11,000, followed by 22,000 and so on by mid-April. The numbers get much scarier after that. As has already been pointed out, early focus on the elderly was inappropriate. The top five risk groups are as follows:
1) Those with preexisting issues (especially lung issues)
2) Smokers
3) The obese (especially if diabetic or pre-diabetic - most fat people are pre-diabetic)
4) The elderly
5) The very young
Someone else put it extremely well when they stated that a healthy 75-year-old has a better chance of survival than an over-weight 25-year-old who smokes. Considering current obesity rates, that's something to think about, even if you don't smoke.

Coronavirus will radically alter the U.S.
There seem to be several projections. Worst case scenario:
If no action to limit the viral spread were taken, as many as 2.2 million people in the United States could die over the course of the pandemic....

What we are currently doing:
Adopting some mitigation strategies to slow the pandemic — such as isolating those suspected of being infected and social distancing of the elderly — only cuts the death toll in half to 1.1 million, although it would also reduce demand for health services by two-thirds.

What we should be doing:
Only by enacting an entire series of drastic, severe restrictions could America shrink its death toll further, the study found. That strategy would require, at a minimum, the nationwide practice of social distancing, home isolation, and school and university closures. And such restrictions would have to be maintained, at least intermittently, until a working vaccine is developed, which could take 12 to 18 months at best.

The problem here is that this report was made before the assumption about the elderly being the most vulnerable was debunked. The death toll will be devastating, but the economy will be radically damaged also and that could also have life and death consequences although those will be more subtle and difficult to detect.

Most people are still in denial and taking this far too casually. The media should be doing a better job of making people aware of this order. The problem is that the public in general tends to either over-react or under-react. Most people have a herd mentality. They just do what everybody else is doing and seem incapable of thinking rationally and logically for themselves. As a result emotion-based "thinking" is what takes place and that's when you get over- or under- reactions. If you've ever heard the term "emotional intelligence" you should realize that such a term is a perfect example of an oxymoron. Emotion and intelligence seldom, if ever, go together. They actually repel each other. Hoarding toilet paper is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. I should probably post this to the Moral Panic thread also, but I won't.

Coronavirus myths: How to identify which viral posts aren't true :roll2:
Maybe I'll start a rumor that gargling with urine will kill the virus. I'm sure someone would try it.

Trump's Response to Kung-Flu Question, Sensationalism During Coronavirus w/Tom Segura | Joe Rogan
Rogan made a comment indicating that he'd like it if the virus killed only mean people with low IQs. A couple viewers responded:
David Armstrong
"Low IQ people who are mean..." My thought exactly!

Ajax Aidy
I wonder if there's not a demographic that consistently shows lower IQs & higher crime rates.

Y O J I M B O
Ajax Aidy: There can’t be. Surely we would have done something about it by now.
Surely.
