The Hills, They are Hollow-Damh the Bard
The Focus song was alright, but I prefer this kind of thing...

This sucker rocks but I must say I prefer the studio version over the live recording.

Pentangle - Willy O Winsbury
This is a Scottish ballad which dates back to at least 1775. This performance is quite simple spellbinding.

Moths 1978 (LP Heavy Horses)
And in this video we see Ian Anderson sitting by the fire smoking a smoke and drinking a drink while singing the song and briefly fluting the flute. My recollection does not indicate that this ever got shown on MTV or not. I think smoking has been banned on TV in the USA for a long time, but I'm not sure if that applies to cable TV or not. This video would have been better without the CGI flames, IMHO. Otherwise, I give it:

Was Hotel California based on a Jethro Tull song?
Ian Anderson dismisses claims of plagarism, but the similarity is impossible to deny.

Jethro Tull- We Used To Know
And here's the song. The chord progression is the same (although the key is different), but you could sing the lyrics to Hotel California to this tune. Also the guitar solo sounds extremely similar. Some of the riffs are almost identical. Not quite plagarism, but it's pretty close.

The songs are awfully similar and I'm sure a good lawyer could make a strong case for plagarism, but like the guy says in the video there are only so many chord progressions and so it's inescapable that many songs use the same or similar chords and so it's inevitable that there are lots of similar sounding songs. It seems to me that I've heard dozens of country songs that sound like they probably use the same chord progression and drum beat and even guitar solos. Don't think of it as plagarism. Think of it as something more like recycling!

That was interesting. I don't understand how rap “artists” can rip off an entire song and get away with it calling it sampling but if it's just a little bit similar they want to call it a rip off. I remember when they tried to do the same thing to Credence. Radio stations had a field day making fun of both sides.

When I clicked on the interview I half expected Anderson to be a jerk about it but having listened to the song I think he was spot on when he was speculating they overheard him rehearsing and then wrote Hotel California subconsciously. I guess a guy who rips off Christmas songs in the middle of a flute solo really doesn't have that much room to talk. It was eerie listening to that song knowing it was written before Hotel California. I wonder if the Eagles would even be famous had they not copied that riff and written the song. Kudos to the Tull band for being flattered. Yeah they probably could have sued the pants off of the Eagles but I'm glad they are not that kind of band.
