CactusHugger: Excellent post! Detecting lies not even mentioned, but extremely pertinent! Lurking variables usually aren't difficult to discover, but they are easily over-looked, especially when people are overly eager to see their biases confirmed or are willing to just take the word of a so-called expert.

Why Teaching How to Beat Polygraphs Can Land You in Jail
We all know that the polygraph is junk science and so the fact that the federal government takes it so seriously can only lead to one conclusion: THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN INFILTRATED BY MORONS!

Apparently it's only junk science if your name is Hillary Clinton.

Conway: May use lie detectors on staff
Stupid is as stupid does. Here a Fox News show host suggests the use of a useless instrument that does nothing. Probably most of the people in his audience are too stupid to realize that lie detectors are useless. Sometimes it seems like something like eighty percent of people in this country (and probably on the planet) are total morons!

She was put on the spot. What did you expect her to do; come flat out and say lie detectors are unreliable? For the majority of people they work. But then the majority of people aren't pathological liars. Though when it comes to politicians that's probably not true!

Your assertion is completely false. Lie detectors do not work any better than flipping a coin. They only appear to work because many people are intimidated by them. Which is basically to say that most people are too uniformed (aka, stupid) to realize the truth about lie detectors. So, having a firm belief that the lie detector operator is not a charlatan, suspects fall for the bluff and confess because they BELIEVE there is no use in continuing the lie. Having produced a confession, conviction at this point is fairly easy since the suspect then produces a complete account of his or her illegal activities. Basically lie detector operators simply push the idea that the person is lying and convince the suspect that there is no use in lying and, viola, the stupid person falls for the bluff hook, line, and sinker. Of course, many false confessions have been produced in this manner since gullible people sometimes believe that they actually committed a crime when presented with what they believe to be scientific evidence produced by the polygraph indicating that they committed a crime. Later forensic and circumstantial evidence shows that they did not commit the crime. Such cases are kept secret for the most part since law enforcement does not want to debunk the myth of the lie detector. However, some such cases do leak since there are some people who really do care about the truth. Ultimately, lie detector results cannot be used in court because their results are SCIENTIFICALLY INVALID.

Pragmatically speaking, the polygraph can be used to intimidate ignorant individuals and so it's a great prop which will fool some of the people some of the time. Scientifically speaking, it's utter and complete horse crap! There is no need to 'fool' the polygraph because its results are NEVER valid. Anything it does is no more relevant to determining the truth than would be flipping a coin. This is every bit as true for normal people as it is for psychopaths or pathological liars. The polygraph is nothing more than a fancy prop.

Jordan Peterson: White lies, black truths and why being truthful is the single most important thing
This is an interesting discussion. Although he doesn't talk about the polygraph at all in this video, he does talk a lot about truth and lies. We all know that polygraph machines are useless for many reasons, but one of those reasons is that the truth is complicated. It's far too complicated for a simple machine to sort out.

How to Detect When People Are Using the Truth to Lie to You
Paltering is more or less using the truth to lie. Read the article!
Paltering is common in business negotiations of all types, politics, and sales, but the tactic can also be used in personal relationships when the pressure is on.

Why Lie Detectors Are BS
In this video certified airhead Lacy Green explains why lie detectors are BS. The amazing thing here is that even a total airhead can be right every now and then. It's kind of like a broken analog clock being right twice a day. However, she does underestimate the error rate quite drastically. She asserts that the error rate is 30% and while that may be true in low stress situations, the higher the stakes, the higher the error rate. If we're talking about murder or rape or something that could land a person in prison for a long time or cost someone a lot of money, the error rate is about 50% which makes the polygraph no more accurate than flipping a coin.
