desertrat: The low IQ demographic is always the most important demographic to media companies. Theoretically half the population has an IQ below 100. However, in reality, due to over a half century of selective breeding as the result of the welfare state, the average IQ is now somewhere around 94. This means that currently somewhere around sixty percent of the population has an IQ below 100. It's a growing market and media companies want to make the most of it.

Radio Stations Banning Michael Jackson Music :roll2:
Making allegations after someone is dead is at best cowardly and very likely opportunistic. The "Leaving Neverland" peudo-documentary provided a huge platform for two guys to make a bunch of cheap accusations. Any halfwit can come up with a story of how they were abused and any drama queen can deliver the accusations in a convincing manner. It takes total idiots to believe the crap. But radio stations are banning MJ tunes as a result. I was never an MJ fan. Don't like his music, but I do believe in being logical, rational, and fair. Accusations are just accusations until they're proven and every accusation made against Jackson has been defeated in a court of law. All that being said, the following video is still pretty funny in a sick and twisted kind of way. I'm pretty sure he says "abusement park" BTW.

Joe Rogan on Leaving Neverland
This is a pretty reasonable discussion of the situation. While many people have gone into the deep end, there are those who haven't lost their minds. Real documentaries are one thing, but the MJ documentary was more of a pretend documentary using drama queens to grab the attention of an audience of halfwits. Adding a little overly dramatic music increases the effect and is more than enough to convince airheads that an assertion is true. The same technique has worked to convince airheads that the world is going to end in twelve years as the result of global warming. As for a grown man showing interest in young children, I don't see that as necessarily a bad thing. There will always be sports coaches, youth pastors, uncles, teachers, counselors, scout leaders, mother's current boyfriends, step parents, etc. who will get overly physical with children, but that's part of human nature and although it's not a good thing it is not something to get morally panicked over either. As for people who are deeply troubled by descriptions of sexual activity involving children, perhaps they live in a bubble where far worse things never happen on a daily basis. IMHO severed limbs, auto crash deaths, life threatening illnesses, actual murders, etc. are all far worse than a child being inappropriately touched. Sorry, but I never lost touch with reality!

Stossel: Moral Panic Over Sex Work
Don't let yourself get emotionally involved in news stories. Insist on the facts and stay level-headed. The media wants to trigger you and get you emotionally involved. Resist that tendency and don't allow yourself to be manipulated by the media.

Ideology As Pseudoscience - A Check List:
1) Uses the trappings of science without the substance (such as scientific sounding language: “proven,” “clinically tested”).
2) Relies on testimonials and anecdotal evidence.
3) Is not skeptical; is not self-correcting.
4) Equates an open mind with an uncritical one.
5) Overuse of ad hoc hypothesis to avoid refutation; ignores or explains away falsifying data. Indifferent to facts.
6) Absence of connection with scientific findings.
7) Relies on vague, exaggerated, or untestable claims (Vague language).
8) Produces beliefs and faith but not knowledge.
9) Is often not testable.
10) Seeks confirming data rather than seeking to critically test assumptions.
11) Often contradicts itself.
12) Reverses burden of proof.
13) Makes little progress.
14) Creates mystery where none exists by omitting information; uses obscure language.
15) Relies on the wisdom of the ancients, the older the idea, the better.
16) Appeals to unfounded authority (or authority without evidence), emotion, sentiment.
17) Personalizes issues.
18) Argues from alleged exceptions, errors, anomalies, and strange events.

shadylady: So, in other words, you are saying that the best anecdote to moral panics is scientific thinking. I tend to agree with that.

The Cycle of Moral Panics
I think this guy provides a framework which applies to some moral panics, but which does not adequately account for all moral panics.

Spot on explanation of how the SRA Moral Panic of the 1980s was spawned. Excellent book recommendation also.

This is the best explanation of moral panics that I've heard. Most moral panics relate to sexual activity because many people tend to obsess over sexual issues.

Children and Moral Panics
It's all a bunch of emotional bullshit. Think logically and the illusions vanish into thin air.
