Old railways to become coast-to-coast nature trail
A 4000 mile trail from Washington D.C. to Washington state. Sounds like one heck of an adventure to me!

This is a pretty expensive adventure, but if you're going to go hiking, then do it luxuriously!

deathvalleyjake: The gear recommendations and the hike destinations were great, but the idea of wearing the same pair of underwear for several days is disgusting. The guy takes the idea of minimizing weight a little too far in my opinion. I could see wear one, wash one, and that's what he seems to do for socks, but there's a point where cleanliness becomes a priority or at least a legitimate concern!

panamint_patty: He definitely knows how to keep the weight of his load way down and I guess when you're walking miles and miles that's most important. Even at that though, I think that he could probably handle adding the weight for a couple spare pairs of undies and keeping the parts down under clean would be priority as far as I'm concerned.

I can see wanting to keep the weight of a pack as light as possible, but there are minimal standards of cleanliness that to me just aren't optional. Besides a couple extra pairs of underwear don't weigh enough to worry about. One good crotch rash and this guy will change his tune!
