NSA Talking Points On Utah Data Center: We're Teaming Up With Tech Companies To 'Protect' The Internet :curse:
In order to persuade people to give up their basic freedoms and to allow the NSA to invade our privacy, they've decided to sell us on the idea that they are "protecting" the internet. What a load of crap! I'm sure that the government will shut down the internet sometime in the next two years for a few hours or a couple days and claim that hackers did it just to convince everyone that we NEED them to protect us!
Yeah. And by "helping" to "secure" those networks, we actually mean "partnering" with the telcos to snarf up every bit of data that crosses those networks for our own spying efforts. And they keep going on and on about the importance of these "partnerships."

WE CANNOT DO IT ALONE -- NOR IS IT IN OUR BEST INTERESTS TO TRY. JUST AS CYBERSPACE AFFECTS EVERY ASPECT OF OUR SOCIETY, SO TOO MUST OUR EFFORTS TO SECURE CYBERSPACE MOVE BEYOND GOVERNMENT TO INCLUDE THE PRIVATE SECTOR, ACADEMIA, AND OUR GLOBAL PARTNERS.

And by "secure cyberspace," we mean "undermine the privacy of everyone" by collecting all their data. That's the part the NSA truly cannot "do alone."

Jigsaw: Phishing Made Easy
Jigsaw is a Ruby script that searches the Jigsaw directory. It can be used for nefarious purposes such as "spearfishing an organization in hopes of hijacking their Twitter account," for example. Basically it's a tool that can be used to perpetrate more effective phishing scams as explained in the video.

Widely Popular Photo-Sharing App Hacked :pac:
Interesting situation. A security company called up Snap Chat and "warned" them of a vulnerability. Snap Chat ignored this extortion attempt and a few days later Snap Chat data was compromised. The security company then set up a website to capitalize on the situation, pretending as if they had nothing to do with the attack. Typical computer security company tactics. They hire hackers to find exploits and then extort customers, giving them the option of hiring them or being attacked. Of course this is all done in such a way that it would be difficult to prove, but you get the idea!

Cyber security experts: NBC fabricated Sochi hacking story :smart:
Misleading news stories have become the norm. It's necessary nowadays to be skeptical of almost anything you hear from almost any source. If they aren't trying to deceive you, there's a good chance that they're passing along bad information that they got from someone else. So much for reliable news sources!

Hackers Can Use Snapchat To Disable, Crash Phone
I guess I'll refrain from trying out Snapchat until they fix this problem. Based on the info presented in this news clip it sounds like it should be an easy fix, but that doesn't mean the folks over Snapchat will fix the problem quickly, although it should!

Security Researcher Punches Holes In NBC's 'Everyone Going To Sochi Will Be Hacked" Story; NBC Doubles Down In Response
This article makes it clear that there is nothing inherently dangerous about the internet in Russia. The same exact thing demonstrated in the NBC video would happen in the USA. If you download stuff from a website that turns out to be malware, it really doesn't matter where you initiate the download from. American journalism at its finest!!! Misleading the hell out of people in order to elicit an emotional response and thereby gain attention.
:curse:
The truth makes for a much less interesting story, however, and as Graham points out, Engel's use of the passive voice ("the phone was hacked" rather than "I downloaded a virus") deliberately obscures what's actually happening on the video. It's not Sochi's wireless connections that are "infected," it's the sites themselves. No one's getting hacked instantly unless they're going out of their way to act carelessly in a potentially hostile environment. Following normal internet safety procedures should keep journalists and Olympic fans protected...

desertrat: There's so much sensationalism in the news nowadays that it's very hard to know what to believe. It would be nice if we could rely on the news as an information source, but that would be reasonable and nothing seems to be reasonable anymore. The news pushes agendas and incites emotional responses and does everything except for what it's supposed to do!

'This Week' Cyber Spying Alert
This is complete and total BS. There are no specifics given at all throughout this entire BS session. It's all about creating a perception that something needs to be done and that if something isn't done American workers/consumers will suffer. Intellectual property is a completely bogus issue and is not something that the government should do a whole lot about. Selling goods that others own patents to should be a crime, but information is not something that should never be considered property. What US corporations want to do is make others pay for information, which is an incredibly lazy way to make money. At the end these irresponsible politicians (aka, assholes) suggest that private corporations should be allowed to hack back. That is an incredibly dumb and insanely dangerous idea. These jerks even pretend that NSA spying on private citizens is excusable while what they accuse (without evidence) the Chinese of doing is really bad.

You won't believe this ex-FBI agent's advice
The somewhat strange reality is that individuals should probably be more fearful of companies misusing their personal info than hackers. On top of that, the greater cyberattack threat to this country comes from corporations, not other countries or terrorist groups. Of course, that depends on how you define "attack". If you look at "attack" as including the slow undermining of our constitution and the transformation of our government from representing the people to representing the corporations, then corporations are the greater threat!
