Worldwide standardization? Good point. Thanks to mass media and the internet everyone is becoming more and more alike. I suppose it has some upsides, but it does seem like something is being lost in the process.

Reading Russian 2.05 - неприлично, запах, рыгать
The lesson features a couple poems about flatulence! It might be reasonable to assert that farts are a universal language!

I like your fartitude, Rusky Ed! That was a pretty entertaining lesson! I may not have learnt a darn thing, but I did enjoy a few laughs!

Russian Geography 23: The Great Patriotic War
I try to catch a Rusky Ed lesson every once in awhile. It's fun to learn something new about Russia and maybe pick up a word or two in Russian.
The number of people who perished as the result of The Great Patriotic War is astounding. To put things into proper perspective, although an estimated six million people were executed in German concentration camps, approximately twenty-seven million Russians died as a result of the war.

Reading Russian 2.14 - Дед Мороз
Since today is the day before Christmas, a little historical info about Father Frost and Santa Claus might be of interest...
First of all Santa Claus in Russian is Санта Клаус and Father Frost, or Grandfather Frost, is Дед Мороз. For the most part, Дед Мороз is the Russian counterpart to Santa Claus, but...

Есть много отличий между ними. (There are many differences between them.)

Опасные бассейны: Хлорка не спасет от болезней
Lots of good vocabulary in this video!

The Shallowness of Google Translate
In short, computer translation is horribly inaccurate and it will be quite awhile before it becomes accurate and reliable. The article is excellent and includes lots of very instructive examples.
...there’s still no attempt being made to go beyond the surface level of words and phrases. All sorts of statistical facts about the huge databases are embodied in the neural nets, but these statistics merely relate words to other words, not to ideas. There’s no attempt to create internal structures that could be thought of as ideas, images, memories, or experiences.

SCHOOL STUFF: Summer Vacation
Consider it a celebration of summer in Russian! :thumb:
Teachers and students all over the world look forward to summer vacation. In Russian “summer vacation” may be translated as:

летний отпуск
летние каникулы

For people who work, the proper term to use is летний отпуск, whereas for those attending school the term is летние каникулы. So, teachers have летний отпуск, but students have летние каникулы.
